His name is Ronnie.

They lived in the same building in Brooklyn growing up. They were best friends and Ronnie loved her so much, but never had the courage to really ask her out. By the time he did, she had met my grandfather. Years went by, life went on.

My grandfather passed of a heart attack in 1986. We moved to Indiana from NJ in '89 with grandma looking to start fresh on her own. Ronnie married, but it didn't last because he didn't really love the woman although they are still friends. He says he never stopped thinking about my grandmother.

When we were in high school my grandmother's sister called and said, "You'll never believe who lives near me?" They had moved to "upstate" NY (something people from Brooklyn seem to do when they retire). It was Ronnie. He had moved in with his mother for many years to take care of her before she died and now he was all alone. So, my grandmother started talking to him on the phone. Then she went for a visit..and another...and another.

After living near us or with us my entire life, she left us in 1998 to be with Ronnie her long lost best friend. He finally had the love of his life.

A few days ago, Ronnie was diagnosed with prostate cancer. She will now endure another heartache as she cares for him and watches him fade out of her life. He's a crazy Irishman from Brooklyn! He too has become such a part of our life and I can't picture her without him.

Sorry for the long comment. This just touched me. I will pass along your story to my grandmother. It's amazing how our hearts are strong enough to hold the bittersweet bliss that is love :)Jenniferhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00880779950112311179noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7926516649756652997.post-7710550853408560142009-11-24T10:22:10.864-05:002009-11-24T10:22:10.864-05:00Kris,

Clif was the only grandfather I ever knew, and you so beautifully told the story that has been floating in my head. Give one extra hug for me today, I will be thinking of you all. I love you.Ashley Archer Marksnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7926516649756652997.post-52888899965987959162009-11-24T07:39:42.440-05:002009-11-24T07:39:42.440-05:00Wow Kristin...that is a beautiful tribute.
